Car mechanic Jorge Odón developed a lifesaving device that will help women in obstructed labor. The Odón Device allows an attendant to slip and inflate a plastic bag with a lubricated sleeve around the head and pull the bag until the baby emerges. Costing less than $50 to make, it has the potential to save babies in poor countries and reduce cesarean section births in rich ones. The World Health Organization enthusiastically endorsed the prototype and has licensed it for production.
